A Juno Award-nominated group that celebrated its silver anniversary last year will headline the season launch of a Coquitlam arts hub this weekend.
And tickets are now on sale for the party at the Evergreen Cultural Centre.
The event on Saturday, Sept. 16 will feature the sounds from The Bills, a quintet made up of:
- Chris Frye (guitar, lead vocals)
- Marc Atkinson (mandolin, guitar, vocals)
- Adrian Dolan (fiddle, accordion, piano, vocals)
- Richard Moody (violin, viola, vocals)
- Scott White (upright bass)
Described by The Herald (Scotland) as “the biggest blast of fresh air to come out of Canada since The Band,” The Bills have two Juno nominations to their credit as well as many Western Canadian Music Awards.
Started by Atkinson and White in 1996 as The Bill Hilly Band, The Bills have become a staple on the North American and European touring circuit with their bluegrass, folk and Americana tunes.
The Bills land on the Evergreen stage at 7:30 p.m.
Pre-shows
But, before that, the Art Gallery at Evergreen will open an exhibit called RISE: Sandeep Johal and Sara Khan. The pair is showing the “joy, power and complexities of womanhood from their perspectives as two South Asian women artists who are mothers to young children,” according to an Evergreen press release.
Curator Katherine Dennis will lead a tour of their display at 4 p.m. — with Johal and Khan in attendance.
The reception for the Evergreen season launch is from 5 to 7 p.m. then moves to the lobby with members from the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem) First Nation offering a welcome at 6 p.m.
Little Fox (aka Alison Jenkins), who performed this summer as part of Evergreen’s inaugural Open Air Performance Series, will also show her musical talent before The Bills’ concert.
