Happy crowds sampling apples in the tasting tent at Apple Fest

It's that time of year again already! The annual Apple Festival returns this weekend October 15 - 16 (11am - 4pm) to UBC Botanical Garden. Entry is only $4 (cash) and includes entrance to the garden (usually $8) and children under 12 are free.

The truck of apples arrived yesterday and 41,000 pounds of apples are being weighed and bagged by tireless volunteers for sale starting tomorrow. There are 75 varieties for sale (25% are organic) and 60 available for tasting in the tasting tent. There are also a staggering 121 apples tree varieties for sale! Click here to visit the garden's website for a complete list of apples and trees available.

Last year we had 19,000 happy event-goers and expect around the same again this year. Come early to avoid dissapointment if you have your heart set on a particular variety of apples.

A family event for all ages, the UBC Apple Festival celebrates one of British Columbia's favourite fruits. From children learning about the diversity of apples to those who remember tasting heritage apples in their youth, the Apple Festival is a great opportunity to not only discover more about this delicious fruit, but have a whole lot fun doing it!

One of the most popular activities at the Apple Festival is our apple tasting tent. For only $5.00, curious event goers can taste up to 60 varieties of new and heritage apples grown in British Columbia. For those looking to learn more, the history and specific features of those varieties can be found in the Friends of the Garden's "published in-house" Apple Booklet, available for purchase ($5.00) at the event.

The BC Fruit Testers have a wondeful display of over 200 varieties of apples. You will be amazed at how different they are when side by side.

There is also food vendors, a popular children's activity area with crafts, face painting, story telling and puppet shows. Choices Market will feature their “Longest Apple Peel” contest, the BC Fruit Testers will be on hand with a display of over 200 different varieties of apples and cider pressing demonstrations, and there will be a variety of talented entertainers to keep the family amused.

All proceeds from this event support the educational, research and community programs in the Garden – your support helps the Garden to Grow.

A Bike Valet will be available at the main entrance and there is a FREE shuttle bus from the UBC Campus West Parkade.

Please leave your furry friends at home. Pets are not allowed in the botanical garden.
