An award-winning Vancouver wine bar-restaurant is closing its doors soon

“We’ve adapted through a pandemic, a fire, a relocation, and an economic rollercoaster."

Vancouver is saying goodbye to one of its acclaimed restaurants soon, as Mount Pleasant's Bar Susu reveals it will close permanently at the end of May.

The Michelin-recommended Bar Susu opened in 2022 in the historic building formerly home to The Whip, earning several accolades in its debut year, including being named one of Canada's 50 best bars of 2023.

Sadly, a June 2023 fire took Bar Susu offline, though for some time its operators, Boxset Collective (Published on Main, Twin Sails Brewing), were able to offer its menu at one of their nearby spaces, what was then Novella on Main Street.

When Susu's original Mount Pleasant home was ready for its return, Boxset brought Novella's run to an end and launched Mexican-inspired bar-restaurant El Gato Gab Gab in its place.

“Bar Susu has always been a bit of a shape-shifter,” said Cody Allmin, co-founder of Boxset Collective, in a media release issued April 25. “We’ve adapted through a pandemic, a fire, a relocation, and an economic roller coaster. What’s remained constant is the creativity, the care, and the community that formed within its walls.”

Bar Susu is just marking one full year back at 209 E 6th Ave, and will be spending the month of May welcoming its guests as part of an extended farewell.

Fans (or first-timers) can expect  a special series of throwback dishes, bottle highlights, cocktails and events to pay tribute to the many chapters of Susu’s
story. To that end, Bar Susu will put some of its most iconic items back on the menu, like versions of the Honey Cruller, Sablefish with Tom Kha Sauce, Crispy Cheese Bites, and Dinosaur Kale Salad.

Bar Susu is adjusting its operating days as well, and will be open from 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays from now through its last day, which will be May 30.

“We’re immensely proud of everything this team has brought to life, and thank everyone for their support over the past three years,” added Allmin.
