Known for its Northern Vietnamese dishes and casual atmosphere, the family-run Mr Red Café has closed one of its two Vancouver restaurant locations.

Mr Red Café shut its doors at 2131 E Hastings St this month; the last day of business was July 11.

"Thank you for your support all these years," the business owners said to its "beloved customers" on the restaurant's website.

Earlier in July, the business shared on social media that the closure was for a relocation.

"We deeply appreciate the unwavering support from the E. Hastings Sunrise community and our patrons from near and far. Your love and encouragement have been integral to our journey, and we are immensely grateful. We will miss you all," wrote Mr Red's operators.

Mr Red Cafe is run by Hanoi native Rose Nguyen and her husband (and chef) Hong Duong. The couple initially opened Mr Red a block over on East Hastings about a decade ago, followed by a larger location on West Broadway in 2016, before the original Mr Red relocated to 2129 E Hastings St in 2017. Ultimately, the restaurant merged into the next-door space and took on its address, 2131.

Additionally, the couple ran a restaurant called Hanoi Old Quarter on Victoria Drive from 2019 to 2023.

For several years, Mr Red frequently occupied a space on Vancouver's restaurant awards lists, like the Vancouver Magazine Restaurant Awards or the Westender's Readers' Choice Awards.

While Mr Red Café has closed the East Hastings location, the neighbourhood - and the address - won't be without a Vietnamese restaurant for long.

A new Vietnamese restaurant called Saigonville is set to open in September at 2129 E Hastings St.

"We wish them the best of luck and hope the customers will be having a great experience under the new restaurant management," said the Mr Red team of the incoming Saigonville.
