After more than 50 years in Metro Vancouver, Paul’s Sub Shop has waved goodbye from its Burnaby home.
The shop at 4608 Imperial St. in Metrotown closed Thursday, Dec. 28, according to a Facebook post.
“With a heavy heart, we regret to inform you that Paul's Sub Shop will be closing at the end of this month/year, and Mama Desa will be retiring,” the post said.
“It's hard to believe after so many years of hard work, but the time has come to take a break.
We want to express our deepest gratitude to our loyal customers, for all your support throughout the years. And of course, a big thank you to our suppliers and vendors as well.”
Staff at the shop on its last day declined to comment further.
“Too many memories,” they told the NOW.
The shop was known for its massive subs and delicious breakfasts.
Facebook commenters shared their favourite memories of the shop.
“Oh Mama Desa! MUCH deserved but oh. so. sad. … She was always the sweetest and most vivacious one-woman show you will see. Treats everybody like family. And cooks with her heart,” said one commenter.
“Thank you for so many great meals! This is probably the hardest place to watch close, nothing even close in the Lower Mainland that I've ever come across. Mama will always be remembered,” said another.
“Every time I was in there (Mama) always was happy and cheerful and was infectious in making my day better after talking to her! Enjoy your well-earned retirement!”
Or one note, in all capital letters: “BY FAR THE BEST SUBS IN WESTERN CANADA,” followed by three exclamation points.
“No other place will ever, ever, ever compare to those subs that mama made.”
