Cilantro Indian Cuisine is taking its popular White Rock restaurant into the city, and opening a second location soon in Vancouver.
Owners Atul Pundir and Anand Singh took their combined two decades of food business experience from around the globe and launched Cilantro in the Vancouver suburb. Thanks to their success in White Rock, the Cilantro team has now taken over at 189 W Broadway (between Cambie and Main) in the space that had previously been the long-standing Gigi's said arrivederci to the location after 30 years.
Here's how Cilantro describes itself on their website: "We have been a huge success ever since we started because of our uncompromising quality, which makes us different from the rest. We serve the most authentic Cuisine. Keeping your health in mind we use the choicest ingredients. Order now and savor yourself with a scrumptious treat. We will be glad to dish up for you."
On the menu at Cilantro's original location are dishes that reflect a mix of western, global, and Indian cuisine, ranging from pakoras, samosas, and kaathi rolls (wraps), to a "Manchurian" veggie dish with Chinese-style sauce. In addition to Greek or a beet salad, Cilantro serves up a range of dishes cooked in the tandoor - the cylindrical oven - including Tandoori Prawns, Lamb Tikka, or Tandoori Phool (marinated cauliflower).
The extensive list of offerings further includes numerous traditional lamb, chicken, seafood, and veggie dishes, as well as those made with goat. Tuck into Aloo Gobi, Prawn Vindaloo, Beef Rogan Josh, Goat Curry, Lamb Korma, and - of course - Butter Chicken. Cilantro also has numerous rice dishes, as well as a range of naan and other bread items.
Cilantro has not revealed specific plans yet for the 48-seat W Broadway location, and no timeline has been set; the restaurant has only shared they are "coming soon" to their new second location.
