Valentine's Day is for showing love, but for one local food business, this year's holiday signals a bittersweet end to a significant story.
Cartems Donuts broke a few hearts across the region Friday (Jan. 24) when operators of the beloved business revealed on its website and social media channels that it will be closing permanently on February 14, 2025.
Even more heartbreaking: Cartems will mark its 14th anniversary on that same day.
Known for its lineup of cake, yeast, and cream-filled (aka "stuffie") donuts in classic and creative flavours, as well as its many vegan offerings, Cartems has historically been among the leaders of the pack when it comes to delectable doughnuts in Vancouver for the past decade-plus.
The Cartems shop at 534 W Pender St in Vancouver was their first brick-and-mortar location; it opened in 2013, but the brand appeared on the scene earlier before securing a permanent space.
In the ensuing years, Cartems added locations in Mount Pleasant and Kitsilano. In 2021, the Kits location closed its doors.
The original Cartems shuttered at the end of November 2023, with pending redevelopment at the site looming large.
Following the Pender Street closure, Cartems shifted some of its ops to its Coquitlam base, which doubled as a storefront. That location, at #4 - 91 Golden Dr will close along with its sole remaining Vancouver shop, located at 2190 Main St.
"Your unwavering support has been the heart of Cartems. From warm smiles to heartfelt conversations, you’ve filled our shop with joy and unforgettable memories," shared Cartems on social media.
The business also noted that pre-orders for donuts are available so fans can ensure they get to eat their favourites before the business' final day.
