Japanese BBQ chain Gyu-Kaku is down to one location in Vancouver as the Broadway location shuttered sometime in the last month.
The permanent shuttering of the Yakiniku restaurant at 950 West Broadway (on the second level) happened quietly; no posts were made on either the chain's or the restaurant's social media, but a note on Gyu-Kaku's website confirms the closure. It appears it closed sometime in September.
"It is with a heavy heart to announce the closing of our Gyu-Kaku Broadway location," states the company. "We would like to thank all our wonderful guests and awesome staff for the great memories over the years."
The Broadway location opened early in 2014.
The global chain, with spots across Asia and North America, specializes in grilled meat dishes with tiny BBQs in the middle of the tables. They encourage social meals and shared plates.
The location at 888 Nelson St. in the city's core remains open, as does the only other B.C. Gyu-Kaku in Richmond.
New Japanese BBQ restaurant already opening
The space wasn't empty long.
Homura Yakiniku has opened up in the same location with a similar setup less than a month after Gyu-Kaku's closure. It too offers BBQ grills and raw meats along with other Japanese eats.
The new spot is open at 11:30 a.m. daily, closing at 9 p.m. on Sundays, 9:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday, and 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
