Watch: Inside Japanese convenience store's newest Vancouver location

A new convenient home for Japanese foods and products

A popular Japanese "konbini" - convenience store - conveniently called Konbiniya, has recently opened the doors to its second Vancouver location.

Konbiniya has moved in at 2307 W 41st Ave in the former home of West Wood Organics in Kerrisdale.

"After 32 years...opening soon!" declared a sign hung at the location ahead of its launch at the end of February.

Konbiniya has indeed been a go-to Japanese specialty grocery store in Vancouver since 1991, operating out of its flagship shop at 1238 Robson St as well as online.

"Konbiniya provides Japanese foods, sweets and snacks, drinks or useful supplies," describes the business' website, noting it aims to be "Your Japanese Konbini - open every day, whenever you need." The store also stocks local Vancouver-made Japanese products as well, all aimed at elevating Japanese "gourmet" culture in the city.

To that end, shoppers at Konbiniya Japan Centre will find items like packaged ramen, chocolates and other candies, beverages, condiments, and all sorts of snacks.

There is all manner of Japanese groceries and local products from popular vendors like Takenaka (a sushi-focused food truck), Kanadell (a bakery), and Coconama (a chocolatier) among others.

You'll find a smaller selection of ready-to-eat packaged meals and treats at the Kerrisdale shop than at the Robson one, but the new store has a stocked freezer with things like heat-and-serve ramen kits. The shop also stocks sundries like beauty products, first aid items, and a few trinkets. Kids will love the toy dispensers at the front featuring popular Japanese characters like Naruto, Pokemon, and more.

While Konbiniya's Robson Street shop is also home to Bon Crepe - a take-out window serving Japanese-style crepes, corn dogs, soft serve and other special items. it does not appear Konbiniya's new Kerrisdale store will also feature a similar option.

Konbiniya is most active on its Facebook page, so follow them there for updates.
