Donair lovers across Canada often agree on one thing: It's the best in Halifax. Actually, donair is the official food of the city of Halifax (voted on, and everything!) and one of the reigning champs on the scene is the King of Donair.
"The King of Donair brand has a cult-like following that is enjoyed amongst all ages," explains the Canadian Franchise Association. "They have a rich history, which has been featured by the likes of National Geographic, the Food Network, the Travel Channel and Vice; all of whom pay homage to their creation."
So why is the Franchise Association covering KOD? Well, they are franchising, and hitting Western Canada hard. Their Edmonton location on Whyte Avenue has just opened--run by a Maritimer franchisee--and they will continue to add outposts, including one soon in Grand Prairie, Alberta, as well as in Vancouver, Calgary, Regina, and Winnipeg.
In fact, it was a wildly popular pop-up event in Calgary in 2016 that solidified the KOD's instinct that this part of the country was hungry for them.
This is exciting news for fans of KOD's East Coast donair eats. King of Donair is credited with introducing donair to Canada back in 1973. Vancouverites be warned, though: none of that West Coast-style lettuce on your donair. KOD plans to keep it Halifax, and top their donair with their standard tomato, onion, and super garlicky sauce.
A donair, in case you've read this far and wondered what we're talking about, is a spit-roasted meat dish made of spiced ground meat that's sliced and piled into a pita with toppings.
Stay tuned for more developments as King of Donair works on their Vancouver expansion.
In the meantime, check out this funny video our now-colleagues at the Vancouver Courier made in 2013, as the Honky Tonk Kid combs the West End in search of an elusive beloved donair.
