Pelicana Chicken, a South Korean-based global fried chicken chain, is expanding in Metro Vancouver with its first location within the City of Vancouver proper

A popular Korean fried chicken chain is set to expand its reach in the region as it preps to open its first location in Vancouver proper.

Pelicana Chicken, which launched in British Columbia in late 2020 in Burnaby, is set to move in at 382 Robson St in downtown Vancouver.

The address is a familiar one to chicken fans; previously the space was the Vancouver home of Big G, the Richmond-based biz that specialized in massive deep-fried "giant" chicken pieces with a variety of seasoning options.

Since landing in B.C., Pelicana has also added an outpost in Victoria and has announced plans to open in Coquitlam and Surrey.

However, its global presence is huge; Pelicana has opened over 3,000 locations since the chain first debuted in 1982. Most Pelicana locations are in South Korea, but the company has expanded into the U.S., as well as mainland China and Malaysia, plus a few other countries.

The company touts “Korea’s unique chicken flavours” and the “signature yan-nyum chicken” – a sweet and spicy sauce developed by Pelicana.

Some of the chicken dishes simply have that traditional fried chicken coating, while others are covered in decadent sauces. Sauce options include soy, garlic, or 'hot devil.' They have "Snowing Cheese" fried chicken, fried chicken gizzard, and spicy seafood soup. Sides include onion rings, cheese sticks, and Kimchi fried rice.
