Metro Vancouver university students release final school project — beer

10 beers are being released by Kwantlen brewing students

It's rare to be allowed to drink students' homework.

But that's the case, from a certain perspective, with soon-to-be graduates from Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) brewing program. The university program is releasing 10 beers as part of their annual showcase of those finishing the program.

“The students’ signature beers are the result of their creativity and two years of intense learning in the diploma program,” says program chair Dominic Bernard in a press release. “It’s exciting to see their passion combined with their skills and watching them develop these recipes, brew them, conduct quality control analysis, and participate in the packaging, design and sales."

The 10 beers are being released every Friday; the first is Bad Habits Maple Bourbon Stout by Mark Yates and Leone Dutra and hit the shelves at the KPU Brew Lab (20901 Langley Bypass) Jan. 28.

“I’ve always been a big fan of stouts, so I wanted to come up with an idea that featured flavours I love outside of brewing,” says Yates in a press release. “The addition of maple and Bourbon flavours creates a rich, delicious complement to the roasted notes in this beer.”

The 10 beers being released are:

  • Bad Habits Maple Bourbon Stout
  • Best Blokes English Special Bitter (ESB)
  • Overcast Brown Ale
  • Summertime Witbier
  • Maumahara Belgian Pale Ale
  • Big Softea Vanilla Chai Latte Stout
  • Citrus Drop British Golden Ale
  • Dark Haze Milk Stout
  • Giovane Pils Italian Pilsner
  • Big Apricot Fruit Saison

The KPU brewing program has been recognized as one of the best in North America, regularly winning awards. Last year it tied for second at the U.S. Open College Beer Championship.
