The West End is now home to a fun new sushi restaurant, replacing the short-lived "new wave Korean bistro" that had been open there previously for just a few months.
Lucky Sushi Co. opened its doors near the end of 2024 at 1184 Denman St (suite #203). The restaurant is on the second floor, and its windows offer stunning views of English Bay and the "A-maze-ing Laughter" (laughing men) statues across the street.
The retro-inspired Japanese sushi and izakaya concept comes from the same owners who operated Horangee Sikdang in the same space; the Korean restaurant was the Vancouver franchise of the Toronto-based spot. Vancouver's Horangee Sikdang opened in July 2024, but shuttered late last fall. According to Google, the Toronto location of Horangee Sikdang is now permanently closed, too.
Operators appear to have transformed the space quickly to usher in Lucky Sushi Co. (you can see some tape and staples if you look closely at some of the abundant signage in the dining room) but they did an overall great job creating a room with playful touches, from the old school Pac-Man arcade game near the front door to the wavy-bordered illuminated mirror that will surely welcome many selfies.
Tables are set with retro Coca-Cola logo napkin holders, while one of the two glass soy sauce dispensers contains a tasty house-made sweet soy sauce.
The menu is largely focused on sushi dishes, including rolls, nigiri, and aburi selections. Some of the larger combo platters, like an 18-piece selection of aburi and nigiri, are served on a long surfboard.
House roll options include the Sesame Bomb, a tempura shrimp and imitation crab roll with a creamy sesame sauce. The sushi is competently made (the rice perhaps a bit too cold) and very well presented. Guests will find plenty to choose from the standard sushi categories, like maki (rolls), sashimi, nigiri, and aburi.
Elsewhere on the menu, there are fun items like a pair of lightly battered and fried nori tacos, filled with rice, imitation crab and your choice of salmon or tuna, tapas or izakaya-style dishes like truffle gyoza, tempura, and tuna tataki. Shareable bowls of curry soup come to the table on individual burners to keep things bubbly hot, too.
Beverages on offer at Lucky Sushi Co. include standard soft drinks (including Ramune), beer, sake, and cocktails - including some that have fun presentations, like ceramic lucky cat vessels.
Lucky Sushi Co. is open Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 5 to 10 p.m., Friday from 5 to 11 p.m., Saturday from 12:30 to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 12:30 to 10 p.m. Reservations are available online. Follow them on Instagram: @luckysushi.co.
