Chances are, if you're from Toronto, there's at least one phone number you have memorized: 967-11-11. That's the number to call Pizza Pizza ("Hey, hey, hey!"), the Toronto-based longstanding pizza take out and delivery chain.
Pizza Pizza goes way, way back to December 31, 1967 in Toronto, then growing in the Ontario market into the 1990s, and coming and going from Quebec in the 1980s and the early 2000s.
When it comes to west of the rockies, things have been, well, rocky, for Pizza Pizza. They entered the market in B.C. in 2009, then ended up closing all their locations. Until now.
This summer, Pizza Pizza opened a franchise location in New Westminster at 527 Sixth Street (in a former Megabite Pizza location). Now they are prepping to open at 1893 Cornwall Avenue in Vancouver's Kitsilano neighbourhood.
The Pizza Pizza is replacing the Cypress Street Animal Hospital, which has moved to a new space in the plaza, called Donegal Place, at the corner of Cornwall and Cypress. The distinct orange Pizza Pizza logo sign has actually replaced the old "Donegal Place" spot on the sign post for the shopping plaza.
Right now the location is bare bones and being outfitted as a pizza restaurant, with just an official "Opening soon" sign affixed to the window.
Pizza Pizza has many claims to fame in Canadian pizza lore, including being the first to delivery pizza in an insulated bag and other marketing and advertising innovations. In March 2017 they added vegan cheese to their menu. They're also known for their sing-songy jingle using their distinct "eleven-eleven" phone number. The New West one, by the way, is 604-277-1111.
For the unfamiliar: it's a pizza chain.
We've reached out to Pizza Pizza's corporate offices to try to get more info on this new move into the Vancouver market and will update when details become available.
