A casual burger joint that just happened to be totally vegan has wrapped up its run as a restaurant in Vancouver's Mount Pleasant neighbourhood.
Planetary Burger, which operated out of 3088 Main St, opened its doors in the fall of 2019. Now the plant-based eatery - which shifted its name to Planetary Kitchen - has revealed it is entering a new chapter of the business, which means shutting down its counter-serve location.
"As of December 19th, we will be closing our Main Street location; as our business continues to evolve, you can still find us at Feast on the UBC campus and on Uber Eats in the new year," explains the closing announcement on the @planetarykitchen Instagram account.
The Main Street space had been listed for sale for several weeks.
Planetary Kitchen's menu focuses on house-made plant-based patties for building into burgers with an array of toppings and sauces. The restaurant also offers fries, house-made dips, and plant-based shakes. Other options include salads and veggie sides as well as treats like dairy-free sundaes.
In early 2022, Planetary expanded its business model to sell packaged items like its vegan burger patties, which are made with ingredients like oats, beets, carrots, mushroom, and apple. In addition to its approach to food, Planetary's commitment to sustainability extends to all aspects of its operations, including its "Mission Zero" packaging program, which aims to eliminate waste.
Following the closure, UBC students can find Planetary Kitchen at Feast on campus; others hoping to support the plant-based burger biz in 2023 will be able to order the food and products for delivery via Uber Eats.
Fans of plant-based burgers will, however, soon have another option in the city, as Victoria's popular Burger Crush preps its first location in Vancouver. The restaurant serves up a menu of burgers, fries, and shakes available in both vegan and non-vegan versions.
