Poll: Where are Vancouverites' favourite donuts from?

Vancouverites don't seem to agree with Yelp...

Vancouver loves its donuts.

Earlier this year Yelp released a list of the top 25 donut spots in Canada, and according to their metrics nine of them are in Metro Vancouver, including the top shop.

While Yelp called it for Mello, Vancouver Is Awesome readers disagreed a bit, but it was a mighty close poll.

Of the 679 local votes, 21 per cent picked the famed Lee's Donuts of Granville Island as the best sweet round treat in the city.

However, just behind was Lucky's Doughnuts from 49th Parallel Coffee. They scored just over 19 per cent of the vote, less than 2 per cent behind Lee's.

While some foodies may be disappointed, Tim Horton's actually rounded out the top three, with nearly 18 per cent of the vote. And, when votes from outside of Vancouver came into play, the corporate chain took first place.

Nearly tied for fourth and fifth were Mello and Cartems, respectively.

In both the Yelp rating and the V.I.A. poll Duffin's finished last out of the local shops, but still had a strong showing with more than 10 per cent of the local vote.

For the math people, here's how all the numbers broke down. Vancouver Is Awesome polled 1118 readers and asked the question: Where are your favourite Vancouver donuts from?

The poll ran from 6/25/2023 to 7/7/2023. Of the 1118 votes, we can determine that 679 are from within the community. The full results are as follows:

Mello 15.76 % local, 13.24 % total
Lee's 21.06 % local, 20.48 % total
Cartems 15.61 % local, 15.92 % total
Lucky's/49th Parallel 19.15 % local, 17.44 % total
Duffin's 10.60 % local, 10.82 % total
Tim Hortons 17.67 % local, 22.09 % total

Results are based on an online study of adult Vancouver Is Awesome readers that are located in Vancouver. The margin of error - which measures sample variability - is +/- 2.93%, 19 times out of 20.

Vancouver Is Awesome uses a variety of techniques to capture data, detect and prevent fraudulent votes, detect and prevent robots, and filter out non-local and duplicate votes.
