Main Street's Torafuku is shaking things up these days with the launch of expanded lunch service with new Taiwanese-style comfort dishes on the menu.
Executive Chef Steve Kuan has brought on board some fresh eats to fit the season, focusing on the kind of warming, filling dishes that will give diners a nice balance to the chilly, wet Vancouver winter weather.
Launching Nov. 15, Torafuku will now be open for lunch and dinner service Tuesdays through Sundays.
The centrepiece of the new lunchtime offerings is a Beef Noodle Soup, made with thin noodles, sake-and-soy braised beef shank, pickled mustard cabbage, bok choy, and a marinated soft-poached egg. Kuan says the dish was inspired by the beef noodle soup he loved eating when he was growing up.
Lunchers will also want to be on the lookout for new rotating cold side dishes: a kimchi yuzu tomato salad; a dish of braised lotus root with ricotta cheese, miso tofu, and spicy chili oil; a king oyster mushroom tempura; a dish of marinated eggplant with ginger garlic and gochujang chili sauce; and a house-made white kimchi. As a bonus, these sides are all totally vegetarian.
Torafuku started serving lunch a year ago, as a way to offer the menu from their sibling Le Tigre Food truck a "parking spot" when the vehicle broke down. The dishes have become a permanent fixture at Torafuku, which means you can still find their Kickass Rice, Finger Lickin' Crispy Chicken and other calling card eats, right there in the restaurant.
Torafuku is located at 958 Main Street in Vancouver. Lunch is served Tuesday through Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
