Vancouver Indian street food restaurant opening second location, plans expansion

"I want Indian cuisine to be known as a competitor to fast food"

Roolzzy is expanding with a new restaurant opening soon in Vancouver's Commercial Drive neighbourhood and another location planned for Surrey.

Rollzzy has been open under a year, but plans are afoot to expand the brand.

One new Rollzzy, which specializes in kathi rolls (an Indian street food) is opening soon on Commercial Drive while a third is being planned for Surrey.

Co-owners Abhishek Gupta, Gunish Thakral, and Brij Bhushan, who are also partners behind Delhi-themed Dilli Heights and the incoming hybrid Corner Pantry Co., are working on opening a location at 2247 Commercial Dr. Plans are to open a third location in Surrey, but a location is still being worked on.

Gupta says kathi rolls, which are quite common in India, are lacking in Canada's food scene.

"You see donairs everywhere, you see burritos everywhere, and Indian cuisine has something similar called kathi rolls," he explains, noting Indian food is much more varied than naan and curries.

The original Rollzzy locations has sold some 50,000 rolls since opening last summer, Gupta says. Indian food, he adds, could be a competitor in the quick, casual food market.

"I want Indian cuisine to be known as a competitor to fast food as well, not just a dine-in concept where you have to sit and eat," he tells V.I.A. "That's the biggest problem I see in the market right now."

However, in North America, there's been little headway for things like kathi rolls he says.

Juno Provisions, a Japanese restaurant at that location for a couple of years, closed down at the end of 2023; they've noted on Instagram their intentions to reopen in Victoria.
