A Mount Pleasant Mexican restaurant has shut down after just over a year, having defaulted on its lease.
A legal notice posted to the entrance of La Cantina de Don Porfirio at 151 E 8th Ave. indicates the restaurant was closed after the tenant defaulted on the lease in December 2024.
"Take notice that the Landlord terminates the Lease effective immediately, pursuant to its rights," reads the notice.
It goes on to explain the landlord intends to reenter the premises.
A second page is referenced but was not posted on the door.
The restaurant has not addressed its closure online. The Don Porfirio website is still in place though its Instagram account hasn't seen a new post since early December. The last post notes the restaurant was going to close for a weekend for renovations.
V.I.A. called phone numbers associated with the restaurant, but one was disconnected and there was no answer on the other. Google's listing for the restaurant notes Don Porfirio is temporarily closed, but doesn't cite a source.
Online reviews for the restaurant stopped about in mid-December.

The restaurant was the latest venture for a Mexican native who previously owned the commissary spot Tacos Jorge; he operated the take-out and delivery business for about two years before selling it (the taco spot carried on using the same name under new ownership for a spell) and spending some time back in Mexico.
Named for a controversial Mexican historical figure, the cantina-style restaurant had fare like tacos, tortas, choriqueso (melted cheese topped with chorizo), enchiladas, and cocktails.
