Vancouver restaurant closing just one year after it opened

Last August, the Cambie Village neighbourhood gained Black Walnut, a contemporary and somewhat upscale restaurant with an emphasis on steak and seafood.

Now, as it nears its first anniversary, the business owners have announced this weekend will be the last for Black Walnut.

The last day of business for the restaurant will be Sunday, July 28.

News of the closure was shared on the Black Walnut Instagram account on Wednesday (July 24.)

"We want to thank everyone who came out to support!" shared the owners in the brief farewell notice. "Come on by before Sunday. Would love to see some of your beautiful faces before we ride off into the sunset."

Black Walnut was a first-time venture for a crew of people who hail from the construction business, with Josh Gonneau as its chef and partner. Gonneau previously was a culinary instructor at VCC and PICA and served as Executive Chef at downtown Vancouver's Cibo Trattoria.

Located at 3456 Cambie St (in what was formerly Kino Cafe), Black Walnut was elegantly renovated to showcase the savvy of its owners, who created a modern dining room with all sorts of eye-catching details.

Gonneau curated a menu of modern bistro-style dishes for Black Walnut, which recently included options like an Asian-inspired Beef Tartare, Mushroom Lasagna, a house burger, and several steak options. The Steak Frites has been on the menu since opening; it's a juicy and perfectly grilled bavette served with large skin-on fried potato wedges and a superstar housemade condiment, a rhubarb chilli ketchup.

Black Walnut did not elaborate on the reason for the closure. 

The restaurant had been one of a couple of openings in the past few months in the area, including nearby Elio Volpe, and would have been across-the-street neighbours from the forthcoming bistro June
