One of the many nice things about having afternoon tea at Notch 8 at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver is that once you pass through the hidden door behind the bookcase and step down into the immersive tea room, it offers a little hideaway for the hour or so you're there.
The posh downtown hotel, known for its elegant themed afternoon tea service, has embraced its inner fall girl aesthetic, which means the tea room is covered in red, orange, and golden leaves and the menu has all sorts of autumn ingredients, from sweet potato and squash to cranberry and plenty of pumpkin spice. Among those offerings, there's even a Pumpkin Spice Latte (PSL) cocktail, which is both a clever take on an espresso martini and dangerously drinkable.
The cocktails are optional add-ons to the tea service, which is priced at $72 per adult and $40 per child (under 12), not inclusive of tax and tip.
The Afternoon Tea includes a pot of tea per person (from a selection of 10 black or herbal varieties, including several seasonal options like Pumpkin Spice or Maple Peach); two scones per person with mascarpone tea cream and strawberry preserves; and five each of seasonal savoury and sweet bites.
Pumpkin Spice and more on the menu for the fall-themed tea
Every tier of the tea tower features items that showcase familiar fall flavours, like the earthy sweet Kabocha Squash Tartlet with apple and sage or the Thanksgiving-inspired turkey salad sandwich with cranberry and pistachio among the savoury bites. On the sweet side, generous portions of treats like a Salted Caramel Apple Pie Bar, Pumpkin Tiramisu, or Cranberry Cheesecake Brownie wrap up an elegant and comforting teatime feast.
Fear not: If you can't eat all your scones, treats, and sandwiches, you can take your leftovers to go.
Notch 8 refreshes its tea theme several times a year, with each run showcasing creative new foods and immersive decor - even the room smells like fall for this installation.
The Afternoon Harvest Tea debuted on September 5 and will run through November 24, served Wednesday through Sunday (as well as Statutory holiday Mondays) with seatings at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m.
Reservations are recommended and can be made online. Notch 8 is also terrific at offering menu adjustments to accommodate dietary restrictions or children; be sure to inform the restaurant well in advance when you make your reservation.
