An anesthesiologist from Surrey is facing a criminal charge of sexual assault and police are looking for more information from the public while the doctor’s pain clinic remains open, with conditions imposed by a judge.

Surrey RCMP says Dr. Olumuyiwa Bamgbade was charged on Sept. 13 after the police received a report on July 18 that a woman had been sexually assaulted while undergoing a physical exam by Bamgbade at Salem Anesthesia Pain Clinic at 6638 152A St., in the Newton neighbourhood.

Surrey RCMP Special Victims Unit took conduct of the investigation and submitted a report to the BC Prosecution Service recommending charges, a Surrey RCMP statement said Wednesday.

Police said Bamgbade turned himself into the Surrey courthouse where he faced the charge and was provided conditions on his practice. The conditions include:

“You (Bamgbade) must not be alone in an examination room with a female patient. If you are to be in an examination room with a female patient, it must only be in the immediate and continuous physical presence of a female chaperone over 19 years of age,” and, “You (Bamgbade) must display in your office and in each of your examination rooms a notice that says that all interactions with female patients in a private room and/or examination room will be done in the continuous physical presence of a female chaperone over 19 years of age.”

Bamgbade has been operating the pain clinic in Surrey since October 2021; prior to that he practiced in Delta, police stated.

Police released a photo of Bamgbade “in an attempt to further the ongoing investigation.”

“We believe that there are likely people in our community who have additional information and we encourage them to reach out to investigators with our Special Victims Unit,” said spokesperson Cpl. Vanessa Munn.

Glacier Media has contacted the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC to ask how a doctor may continue to operate while facing a sexual assault charge.

Bamgbade's online college registration page shows no practice conditions and no public notifications, as of Wednesday. It states Bamgbade has a bachelor of medicine and surgery from the University of Ibadan in Nigeria, in 1991.

Munn says the college is aware of the charges.

Bamgbade states on LinkedIn he presently works as an anesthesiologist for the Interior Health Authority and is a clinical assistant professor at the University of British Columbia.

He had a stint at the University Hospital of Northern British Columbia from 2013 to 2016; before that he worked in Manchester, England.
