A B.C. man who has allegedly repeatedly attacked, sexually assaulted, choked and threatened the same woman remains before Vancouver Provincial Court.
The Vancouver man, who Glacier Media is not identifying as it could identify the victim, has faced 20 charges and was released on $30,000 bail in January. The charges cover events between October 2022 and November 2023.
Many of the charges are so-called ‘K files,’ indicating domestic partner violence. Some of the charges have been resolved and sentencing has taken place but others remain before the court.
The 32-year-old man appeared before Judge Eugene Jamieson on May 1 to set future court dates.
For Feb. 5, 2023, the man is charged with assault and assault by choking, suffocating or strangling.
It's alleged he harassed the woman and made her fear for her safety between Aug. 4 and Nov. 26, 2023. He is charged on that same court information with breaches of a release order for Nov. 22 and between Nov. 25-26, 2023.
In connection with July 24, 2023, the man is charged with sexual assault and uttering a threat to cause death or bodily harm. He is also charged with uttering a threat to cause death or bodily harm for Oct. 15, 2022.
The man is also accused of assault and assault by choking, suffocating or strangling of the woman May 27, 2023. He is also facing an assault charge for that day.
It's alleged the man attempted to intimidate a justice system participant, the woman, between June 1 and June 12, 2023. For the same dates, it’s alleged he failed to comply with a release order by communicating with the woman. He is charged with the same offence for the period of June 29 to July 27, 2023.
It is further alleged he assaulted the woman between July 1 and July 14, 2023.
The man is further charged with breach a release order between June 22-23 by attempting to contact the woman.
Another assault is alleged to have occurred July 15. He is also charged with unlawful confinement for the same day. He is charged with another assault the following day.
For Nov. 27, 2023, he is charged failing to comply with a release order. In connection with an incident that same day, the man is charged assault by choking, suffocating or strangling of the woman.
The man elected trial by provincial court judge Nov. 29, 2023.
He pleaded guilty that day to the Oct. 15 count of uttering a threat and three counts of failing to comply with a release order.
On Dec. 1, he was sentenced to 18 months’ probation fined $1,000, ordered to have no contact with the woman and told to take counselling on relationships and anger management as directed by his probation officer.
He was also ordered to submit a DNA sample.
