Tears flowed freely as family and friends gathered to say goodbye to Ashley Wadsworth.
The emotional service was held Wednesday for the Vernon teen whose life was tragically cut short during an extended trip to the UK.
Along with those attending in person, countless more watched the service online.
Ashley's uncle, Shane Waters, was the first to speak at the service, talking of the person the beloved teen was and how her spirit brought joy to those around her.
He talked of her adventurous nature, her love of life and her love of those around her.
“She was most happy being outside in the sunshine, surrounded by people she loved,” said Waters.
Waters said hearing her grandparents' stories would always bring a big smile to Ashley's face, and she had an unquenchable desire to travel.
“Throughout her life, Ashley's caring spirit touched everyone around her,” said Waters, adding Ashley was always ready and eager to help others, especially special-needs students at her high school, W.L. Seaton.
“I can still hear her contagious laugh. I know that is something we will cherish for ever,” said Waters.
Waters spoke of Ashley's tremendous bond with her sister, who “she never went a day without speaking to.
“We are all better people to have known and loved you. You gave so much,” said Waters, at times his voice cracking.
Kent Burnham, from the Mormon Church in Vernon, also spoke. Ashley became a member of the church last year.
“Ashley was a delightful member of our congregation, She brightened and strengthened the group just by being there,” said Burnham.
Robert Wadsworth, Ashley's uncle, said Ashley was an “amazing soul.”
“She had the most amazing aura around her that made her so special,” he said. “There are no words to describe how we are feeling. I hope we can find peace in our own way and share the memories of Ashley so she will live on forever in us.”
Chris Harwood-Jones with the Anglican Church officiated the service.
He said many people have been impacted by the loss of Ashley, even those who may have never known her.
Harwood-Jones offered words of comfort for Ashley's friends and family, saying she will live on in the kingdom of God.
The celebration of life was held at the Pleasant Valley Funeral Home in Vernon.
The livestream has temporarily ended and will resume at the graveside ceremony.
