A stranger caught a special moment between two first responders and a woman in care in Nanaimo on Oct. 4, 2024.

Two B.C. paramedics are being praised for a heartfelt gesture they did for a woman in care.

Annie Bright was at Departure Bay Beach in Nanaimo on Oct. 4 when she noticed an ambulance pull up beside her, around 11:20 a.m.

“I was sitting at the beach and I thought they were just there for a coffee break,” she says.

Bright watched them bring a woman out on a stretcher, who she believed was an elderly woman.

“On their way to the hospital, they brought her an ice cream and brought her to the beach to enjoy it,” says Bright. “I bet this is her best day ever.”

The three of them sat together for about 20 minutes enjoying a special moment. Bright was brought to tears and approached the paramedics after to say thank you.

“It touched me because I know how seniors can be treated,” she says. “My dad was in the hospital for four months before they finally agreed to get him into long term and my mom passed away in the same establishment as dad.”

Bright decided to share a photo from the moment on Facebook so others could enjoy it too. The image has been widely shared.

“I am happy it brought emotion and compassion out from everybody that saw that photo, as much as it did for me… I’m going to cry right now talking about it,” she says.

She did ask the paramedics if she could share the photo before posting it.
