A bid to have a man found guilty of sexually assaulting and strangling a 13-year-old Burnaby girl set free because of court delays has been denied.
B.C. Supreme Court Justice Lance Bernard gave his decision from the bench Thursday morning, saying his reasons would follow at a later date.
Ali's next court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday, when dates will be set for his sentencing.
A jury found Ali guilty in December of first-degree murder in the death of the girl, whose body was found in Burnaby's Central Park on July 18, 2017.
The girl's name is protected by a publication ban.
Ali's legal team filed a so-called "Jordan" application to have his conviction thrown out because of court delays.
The Crown opposed the application, and Bernard ruled on the case after multiple days of submissions ending Thursday morning.
