When a 30-year-old man who pleaded guilty to kidnapping a victim from a vehicle at gunpoint in Richmond will be sentenced remains unknown.
Michael Husain appeared by video in Vancouver provincial court on Oct. 6.
Husain pleaded guilty in March to three charges, including kidnapping using a firearm, assault causing bodily harm and using a firearm to commit an indictable offence.
The charges relate to a September 2021 incident.
Crown prosecutor Jeremy Hermanson told Judge John Milne Husain had fired his lawyer, prompting the judge to ask if he had a new one.
“No, I’m still looking for a new lawyer,” Husain said from Surrey Pretrial Centre where he is being held.
He told the judge he had not received any of the Crown disclosure on his case, saying he had asked his previous lawyer for the documentation but had not received it.
Milne directed that Husain receive the information on a thumb drive.
The case returns to court Oct. 20.
Three other people were charged in connection with the kidnapping.
For her part in the offences, Ashley Smith was sentenced to almost six years behind bars Sept. 28.
According to a Vancouver Police Department (VPD) statement at the time, the victim was assaulted, restrained and suffered significant, but non-life threatening injuries.
Following a “brief pursuit” by police, VPD officers rescued the victim.
The four suspects were arrested in Richmond.
An investigation into home invasions, said police, led to the suspects being charged with kidnapping.
