For Tri-Cities residents with a sweet tooth, there are two reasons to cheer this month.
Doughnut Love is whipping up its specialty Snowflake Dream treat to help raise money and build awareness for the Amanda Todd Legacy Society.
It’s the second year the Coquitlam company has backed the Port Coquitlam non-profit organization, which supports community projects and helps people struggling with mental health, cyberbullying and online exploitation.
Last year, the Como Lake Avenue business brought in $2,262 with Snowflake Dream.
The doughnut is topped with a blackberry buttercream glaze and snowflake sprinkles — the colour (purple) and symbol of the society, which is hosting its signature online auction until Oct. 14.
The limited-edition doughnut in October also coincides with the World Health Organization’s dedicated World Mental Health Day, Oct. 10; Amanda’s suicide death on Oct. 10, 2012; and the upcoming sentencing hearing for Amanda’s tormentor.
Next week, Justice Martha Devlin is scheduled to hear lawyers’ submissions at the New Westminster Law Courts, as well as the Todd family’s victim impact statements, before she sentences Dutch citizen Aydin Coban to the five charges he was convicted of in August, following a nine-week jury trial.
"I think everyone has to be more aware of these types of crimes like sexploitation and cyberbullying," Doughnut Love co-owner Kathy Hiles told the Tri-City News today (Oct. 7).
"The whole message is important and families need to communicate with their children at an early age to be aware of what’s happening online. Amanda shouldn’t have had to go through this. It’s unfortunate that she was terrorized in this way."
Meanwhile, Royal City Donuts in New Westminster plans to expand its Donuteria business into Burquitlam and Vancouver, it announced on social media this week.
Currently, it has a shop at 656 Columbia St.
