Photos: This Coquitlam elementary unsealed its Y2K time capsule

Daren Fridge, the principal of Coquitlam's Harbour View Elementary, unpacked the contents of the school's Millennium Time Capsule on Friday, Jan. 24, 2025. The school is now preparing a 2050 version.

Artifacts from the year 2000 were pulled from a Millennium Time Capsule at Coquitlam’s Harbour View Elementary this afternoon, Jan. 24.

Principal Daren Fridge rolled in the handmade wooden box with John Richardson, who was principal of the Lillian Drive school 25 years ago, and other former teachers that helped to prepare the contents.

Former teacher Aaron Rahn even knocked on the box before Fridge grabbed the giant shears to cut the lock and unpack the objects before the 276 students, as well as teachers, staff and alumni, and lay them out on the blue-covered tables for viewing.

Among the millennium items inside were:

  • a letter from Richardson to the current principal
  • newspapers, CDs and a VHS tape
  • pennies
  • a third-place ribbon from the Como Lake Relays
  • a City of Coquitlam calendar
  • a Terry Fox run poster
  • a Harry Potter book
  • pins and trading cards

During the unpacking, Richardson, who retired from Pinetree Way Elementary in 2003, told the Tri-City News that he remembers the box being loaded in the gym in 2000 under the direction of teacher Paul Berry.

And while he joked about how some of the contents are now redundant, he was happy that some students who said goodbye to the time capsule then are currently teachers at the elementary school.

Fridge said the student body is thinking about how to refill the box for the students in the year 2050 — a quarter of a century away.

Last year, Harbour View Elementary marked its 60th anniversary.
