Travel will be difficult in Metro Vancouver due to dense fog over southern British Columbia.

Environment Canada issued a fog advisory at 5 p.m. on Monday for Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.

"Near zero visibility in fog is expected or occurring,” states a meteorologist.

The dense fog is expected to start at 5 p.m. and continue through the night until Tuesday morning.

"A ridge of high pressure which is anchoring over southern B.C. will provide a conducive environment for dense fog formation,” states the advisory. "Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility.”

If you are driving, visibility can be significantly or suddenly reduced to near zero.

Drivers should turn on their lights and maintain a safe distance.

Fog blanketed many parts of Metro Vancouver during the morning and day on Monday but an advisory was not issued until later.
