A man in his 40s was sent to hospital Sunday afternoon after a tire flew off a pickup truck on Highway 1 in Burnaby and smashed into the windshield of his minivan.
At about 2:35 p.m., police got multiple calls at about a single vehicle collision in the westbound lanes of the highway close to the Kensington exit, according to RCMP Sgt. Chris Manseau.
On scene they discovered something more unusual had happened.
“It was reported that a vehicle tire struck a van, and the driver was being treated for injuries sustained when the tire struck their windshield,” Manseau said. “They were driving westbound when the tire came flying towards them over the median.”
Manseau clarified the errant tire was attached to a wheel.
Dashcam video of the incident posted on social media shows the wheel and tire smashing into the van, launching high into the air and bouncing onto the highway.
Manseau said police officers found the tire on the right shoulder and located a Black Dodge Ram 1500 with a missing driver-side rear wheel and tire in the eastbound lanes.
Westbound traffic was snarled for a couple of hours as fire trucks blocked off lanes until the two vehicles involved were towed.
