'Vigorous' storm in Metro Vancouver impacting flights, ferries

Northwest winds are expected to gust up to 100 km/h.

A wind warning has been issued across Metro Vancouver for Monday.

Very strong northwest winds are expected from 11 a.m. until the evening, with gusts of up to 100 km/h possible.

The Environment Canada wind warning includes the City of Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster, Richmond and Delta.

"A vigorous frontal system moving across the south coast today will produce strong winds and heavy rain,” says a meteorologist with Environment Canada.

"Behind the cold front, strong northwest winds have developed across the Strait of Georgia and will blow across Metro Vancouver today.”

Winds are expected to diminish this evening as the frontal system moves inland and weakens.

People are being asked to make sure loose objects that can be tossed by wind are removed.

High winds may result in power outages and fallen tree branches.

There's also the possibility of 30 to 40 millimetres of rain on the North Shore and 40 to 70 mm over the mountains.

The heavy rain will reduce visibility during rush hour in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.

BC Ferries has announced that multiple routes have been cancelled due to the forecasted high winds in the Strait of Georgia and North Vancouver Island.

Travellers at Vancouver International Airport are being impacted, according to staff.

"The Metro Vancouver region is experiencing strong winds, which is impacting some flight schedules at YVR," says a spokesperson. "Our number one priority is the safety of passengers, employees, and our community."

YVR staff will continue to work with NAV CANADA and their carriers to monitor the weather and flight status.
