Boeing Plant
Having opened soon after war was declared in September 1939, the Boeing plant on Sea Island was in full swing by the time this 1942 photo was taken. Employing 6,000 people at its peak, most of them women, the plant built Canso, Catalina and B-29 superfortress aircrafts. It shut down quickly after V-J Day, leaving many workers stunned and highlighting the abnormal economic and labour situation that existed during the war.
