Photos: Vancouver's Commercial Drive in the 1970s and 80s

The Drive is one of Vancouver's most popular neighbourhoods. Here's what it looked like 40 years ago.

Not all of Vancouver's archival photos are from the 1880s, 1900s, or 1910s.

Historic pictures can be much more recent and still show a lot of change, like these shots on Vancouver's (trendy) Commercial Drive.

The neighbourhood was established more than 100 years ago and has seen a lot of growth over the years. Some of the most recognizable buildings in the area are actually more than 110 years old and have sustained many of the area's cultural shifts.

For much of that time, Commercial Drive - aka The Drive - has been a vibrant area, including the late 1970s and 1980s.

It's long been an area home to many immigrants; it's Vancouver's Little Italy, there are Portuguese ties to the area, and in the 1980s the local Latino population grew in the neighbourhood.

At the same time, there was a strong counter-culture shift in Commercial Drive that can still be seen today.

In 1985 the SkyTrain station opened up at Commercial and Broadway. It remains one of the city's busiest transit hubs.

In the last few decades Commercial Drive has seen some new developments, like the Il Mercato mall, but no towers like other parts of the city (though there have been proposals). At the same time, it's become a trend-setting area, especially when it comes to food.
