On Jan. 29, 1966, Grouse Mountain Resorts Ltd. opened their new aerial tram, known as the Skyride.
The 50-passenger system, ordered from Austria, was the idea of Andrew Saxton Sr., who had purchased the mountain from the Cromie family in 1964 and wanted to install a new method of bringing visitors to the top.
At the time, it was the largest double reversal passenger-carrying tramway in Canada, travelling roughly one mile in just five minutes. The tram was replaced a decade later by the 100-passenger “Super Skyride,” or the Red Skyride.
