Vancouver consignment store Dragon and Phoenix has seen fashion trends come and go.
The shop has survived a move from Kerrisdale to Dunbar-Southlands and a pandemic to reach a milestone 40 years in business. But even owner Audrey Hubbard admits it hasn't always been smooth sailing.
“It’s been a lot for everyone over the last few years, but we’ve been awestruck by our loyal community who’ve got us through. They’re all like family and we want to honour them however we can,” she says in a media release announcing celebrations for the anniversary.
Founded in 1982 by Christine Zimmerman, Hubbard took up the mantle as owner and operator in 1990 when the store was still on East Boulevard in Kerrisdale.
Dragon and Phoenix moved to West 41st Avenue near Dunbar in 2003 and has been there ever since. Since the pandemic, however, the store has been reinvigorating itself and looking for ways to rebrand and renew - like its namesake.
Hubbard manages the store with her daughter, Faidra Berda, and together the pair consign designer and mainstream clothing and accessories. The store only stocks items that are in like-new condition and that are under two years old.
They credit their longevity as a small under-the-radar business to a loyal and dedicated customer base and to give back to them they are hosting a week of daily specials, in-store events, promotions, and giveaways.
From October 15 to 23 there will be up to 20 per cent off everything in-store and chances to win $50 or $100 gift certificates. There will also be canapés and refreshments, plus in-store personal stylists and guests.
People can also follow along on their social media for stories and pictures from the last forty years featuring some wild hairstyles and fashion choices.
