A 54-year-old man is in hospital after being pinned under a transit bus in Burnaby Wednesday evening.
Emergency crews were called to the Sperling SkyTrain bus loop near Lougheed Highway just before 6 p.m., according to assistant fire Chief Stewart Colbourne.
At the entrance to the bus loop, they found a man pinned under a bus.
“He was midway between the front and rear wheels,” Colbourne told the NOW. “His head and chest were outside of the bus, but he was pinned underneath.”
The firefighters first on scene called in the Burnaby Fire Department's rescue task force, stationed at Fire Station 1 on Sperling Avenue just across Highway 1.
That team used air bags to lift the bus off the man, who was then taken to hospital by ambulance, according to Colbourne.
In a Twitter post later in the evening, Burnaby RCMP said the man was in stable condition.
Spokesperson Cpl. Mike Kalanj said the bus driver is cooperating with the investigation.
He said police are currently waiting for TransLink to hand over video footage from bus and SkyTrain cameras so investigators can determine what happened.
The incident was one of two collisions involving pedestrians Wednesday.
A 65-year-old man, hit at about 5 p.m. by Walker Avenue and Imperial Street, was also reported to be in hospital in stable condition.
