***UPDATE as of Friday, Dec. 24 at 2:30 p.m.: The bridge has reopened. Find out more information online.*

Local drivers are being advised that the Alex Fraser Bridge is closed for public safety reasons.

On Friday (Dec. 24) morning, the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure stated that a full closure of the bridge is "necessary to protect travellers due to snow buildup on the cables."

Due to high winds, rope technicians cannot deploy the drop system that they use to clear cables to prevent snow or ice shedding onto the lanes below.

Conditions are being closely monitored but the ministry cannot state how long the closure will remain.

Motorists are encouraged to use alternative routes.

All travellers are reminded to follow signs and watch for traffic control personnel.

Motorists are reminded to drive to the conditions, by slowing down, using extra caution and increasing following distance.
