Realizing a man that jumped in his car wasn't who he said he was, a Vancouver driver's quick actions led to the suspect's quick arrest.
The incident happened Wednesday, Feb. 10, around 8 p.m. at a grocery store near East Hastings Street and Clark Drive. A man got into his car after shopping and was leaving when the suspect allegedly opened up the passenger door and jumped in, according to a Vancouver Police Department (VPD) press release.
He then allegedly claimed to be a police officer.
“Fortunately, the driver recognized that this was not actually a police officer, but rather someone who was allegedly committing a crime,” says Sgt. Steve Addison. “The victim quickly got out of the car and flagged down a VPD member just as the suspect was trying to put the car in gear. Two other officers arrived moments later and helped arrest the suspect.”
The suspect, a 34-year-old man, was taken to jail; the VPD is still investigating the incident.
Addison notes it was a dangerous situation and that officers were in the right place at the right time.
