Provincial politicians in British Columbia are lending their support to the Terry Fox Foundation as it organizes its first in-person community runs since 2019.
Premier John Horgan and MLAs recently stood on the steps of the legislature in Victoria with Terry Fox’s brother, Darrell, in their foundation T-shirts.
Another photo was snapped with some MLAs in red Terry’s Team Member T-shirts, indicating their journey with the same disease that took Fox's life in 1981.
The photo shoot was organized by Coquitlam–Maillardville MLA, finance minister and cancer survivor Selina Robinson, along with the Office of the Speaker and Mark Pettie, a Coquitlam resident who is part of the Mundy Park run.
Port Moody–Coquitlam MLA Rick Glumac is also pictured wearing a red shirt.
Pettie said the inspiration for the group photo — as well as the MLAs' social media outreach for the run on Sunday — came from the foundation’s recent campaign that features Canadian celebrities such as Sidney Crosby and Rachel McAdams donning this year’s T-Shirt with Fox’s face and the tagline “I’m Not A Quitter.”
Proceeds from the special limited edition T-shirts go to cancer research.
“In the next few days, our provincial MLAs will be posting pictures of themselves on their social media accounts helping promote Terry Fox Day in B.C.,” Pettie told the Tri-City News.
“This Sunday, Sept. 18 is officially Terry Fox Day in British Columbia. We are hoping that all residents will take some time to honour the memory and legacy of our Canadian hero Terry Fox. It truly is amazing that, 42 years later, Terry remains a leader of what’s best in Canada and through his foundation keeps his dream alive of finding treatments and cures for cancer.”
• There are two Terry Fox Runs in the Tri-Cities on Sunday, starting at 10 a.m.: the Hometown Run at the Hyde Creek Recreation Centre (1379 Laurier Ave., Port Coquitlam); and at Mundy Park (off Hillcrest Street, Coquitlam).
For the Hometown Run, Terry Fox’s brother, Fred, will speak, as will cancer survivor Erin Danielle and Port Coquitlam Mayor Brad West. The Bollywood Boyz (former WWE SuperStars Gurv and Harv Sihra) will lead the warm-up. Drew Savage, host of The Nat and Drew Show on MOVE 103.5 FM, is the emcee while Brad Lovell will sing Rod Stewart’s song for Terry, “Never Give Up On A Dream.” As well, Cakewalk will supply the high-energy tunes.
