A provincial by-election will be held before the end of the month for voters in southern Vancouver.

The riding of Vancouver-Quilchena is currently vacant after former provincial Liberal leader Andrew Wilkinson stepped down in February.

In a press release it was announced a by-election for the seat would be held at the end of the month.

"Premier John Horgan has called a by-election for the Vancouver-Quilchena electoral district for Saturday, April 30, 2022," states the Office of the Premier in the release.

Nominations for the riding close at 1 p.m. on April 9. Advance voting will be April 22 to 27.

The by-election will be the first under the modernized Elections Act according to Elections BC.

"The new technology includes electronic voting books and tabulators, which will allow Elections BC to provide better service to voters and report results faster on election night," states the provincial elections agency.

Paper ballots will still be used, but the voting books will be laptops used by election officials to cross voters off, while the tabulators will be used to count the marked ballots.
