A 22-year-old man is recovering from "grave injuries" after being stabbed several times while delivering food in Vancouver's Chinatown.
The incident happened around 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11 near the intersection of Gore Avenue and East Pender Street. While the young man, a newcomer to Canada, was locking his bike to a pole along the street, he was approached from behind by a stranger, according to the Vancouver Police Department.
“The victim suffered a number of stab wounds, including injuries to his chest and throat,” says Sgt. Steve Addison. "Despite grave injuries, he was able to call 911 for help, and several witnesses provided first aid until police arrived. His injuries were life-threatening, but we now expect him to pull through."
The suspect, a 43-year-old man, was arrested a short time later at CRAB Park, according to the VPD.
Dennis Amanand Prasad has been charged with aggravated assault in the case, say police.
Bystanders are being credited with providing essential aid to the man and the officers who arrived on the scene.
“We commend the bystanders who comforted the injured victim after the attack, and others who provided eyewitness information that led to the quick arrest of a violent offender,” says Addison.
