The playground at Aspenwood Elementary was taped off by Port Moody police today (April 14) after kids' eyes were exposed to an unknown substance.

Port Moody police (PMPD) are investigating into what allegedly appeared to be hot sauce found smeared at a local school.

The unknown substance was found on high-touch surfaces of the Aspenwood Elementary playground and resulted in minor injuries to the eyes of seven children today (April 14).

PMPD officers were called to the School District 43 (SD43) institution around 12:30 p.m. — located at 2001 Panorama Dr. — where it was determined the suspected hot sauce had been intentionally smeared.

Children were then experiencing reactions as the substance was exposed to their eyes, spokesperson Const. Sam Zacharias explains, noting police are "actively investigating the matter to determine who is responsible."

A total of seven kids were treated for injuries at the school.

Zacharias says some were sent home early, while the rest stayed at Aspenwood for the remainder of the day

Port Moody Fire Rescue and BC Ambulance Service also responded to the incident today.
