A truck was immediately impounded after it was recently caught going nearly double the speed limit on the Lougheed Highway.
It clocked in at 135 km/h in a 70 zone — an excessive speeding violation Coquitlam Mounties are still trying to discourage local commuters for the fall and winter months.
The impoundment took place after 406 traffic violation tickets were issued during the month of October, more than 60 per cent of which were for speeding:
- 256 speeding tickets
- 101 intersection violations
- 48 for distracted driving
- 35 for seatbelt violations
- Seven impaired driving violations
The speeding category was the only month-over-month increase RCMP recorded — 5.4 per cent compared to 243 from September — and the only statistic in triple digits.
"One person's choice to speed puts others at unnecessary risk. Please slow down," Coquitlam RCMP pleads in a social media post.
In its latest update, ICBC says an average of 27 people die across the province each year from motor vehicle incidents when excessive speeding of at least 40 km/h above the limit was a contributing factor.
In Coquitlam, more than 265 casualty crashes took place along the Lougheed Highway in 2020.
