Strong winds are blowing across the south coast of British Columbia Monday morning, and residents are being warned trees may fall and the power could go out.
Environment Canada has issued a wind warning for Metro Vancouver, specifically for the areas coastal and southern communities in Delta and Richmond.
"A strong fall storm approaching the south coast will bring increasing southeasterly winds to parts of the mainland coast tonight," they state. "Winds are expected to peak on Monday morning, but will remain strong throughout the day."
Gusts up to 90 km/h are expected, bringing with it broken tree limbs and power outages.
"Winds will ease through Monday evening as the storm crosses Vancouver Island and moves inland," states the weather agency.
Other areas are still forecast to see slightly lower winds. A special weather statement applies to the following areas:
- Metro Vancouver - central including the City of Vancouver Burnaby and New Westminster
- Metro Vancouver - North Shore including West Vancouver and North Vancouver
- Metro Vancouver - southeast including Surrey and Langley
Wind speeds of 40 km/h gusting at times to near 70 are expected, with the potential for stronger winds near the water. Areas from Bowen Island to Point Atkinson can expect winds near 60 km/h gusting to 80.
In advance of the high winds, BC Ferries has already cancelled several sailings today on multiple routes, including those in and out of Metro Vancouver.
