Explosion at Downtown Eastside hotel injures one, sends glass into street below

It appears to be an accident.

An explosion at the Astoria Hotel has sent one man to the hospital and glass onto East Hastings street.

Firefighters were called at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, after the explosion in a second-story suite at the SRO at 769 East Hastings St., says Asst. Chief Brad Hesse.

"What we had came in was an explosion and blown out window on the second story," Hesse tells Vancouver Is Awesome.

Firefighters arrived on scene and were able to put out a minor fire at the scene, he adds. Sprinklers did activate, which help control the fire.

The lone occupant of the suite was taken to hospital with moderate injuries; no one else was in the suite.

"He was up and talking when we got there," says Hesse.

While shards of glass were sent across East Hastings no one was injured on street level.

Hesse says there are no signs the explosion was a malicious act, though a reason for the explosion hasn't been released. Fire investigators are still on the scene determining the exact cause.
