As vehicles once again roll through Gastown, a new sign greets them at Maple Tree Square.
The historic centre of Gastown (and the community that became Vancouver) has a new landmark sign with the district's name in a colourful, modern font stretching 30 feet down Water Street.
The new sign was set up this week as the pedestrian pilot that took over the area over the summer (after infrastructure repairs) concluded. It's part of the Gastown Business Improvement Society's efforts to draw people to the area this fall.
"The GBIS invites people from Vancouver and beyond to explore all that this historic district has to offer, including a new Indigenous augmented reality art installation in Le Magasin Alley, and the BC Parks Foundation’s wishing tree in Maple Tree Square," reads a press release from the agency.
The sign was created by local design and brand agency WKNDRS.
While there is no permanent "Vancouver" sign set up in the city, the idea has been discussed by city council. Many other cities, from Toronto to Amsterdam, have similar signs.
