A GoFundMe campaign is raising thousands of dollars for the family of Paramjit Masutta, a Surrey mom who was killed by a runaway cargo van while walking her daughters home from school on Tuesday, Dec. 15.
The fundraiser's description page calls Masutta "heroic," adding that she was "the most beautiful, dedicated mother to twin girls and a loving wife."
Masutta was accompanying her 8-year-old twin daughters home from school in the Newton area at around 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday when an unoccupied delivery van that had been parked on a decline suddenly began rolling, out of control, down 144th Street.
"She barely had 2-3 seconds to react and her reaction was to save her girls—the apple of her eyes—pushing them out of the way either side before she fatally sustained severe internal injuries that took her life almost suddenly," organizers explain in the GoFundMe's description.
They add, "that was Paramjit—always keeping her kids safe."
According to fundraiser organizers, the Masutta family had recently moved to the neighborhood "and were enjoying a wholesome life before this tragedy suddenly took the road from under them all."
In addition to her children, Masutta leaves behind her husband, Daljit, who "will have to not only come to terms with the sudden loss of his loving wife of 26 years but to raise his bright girls up to fulfill their lives and dreams," write organizers.
"For now, Daljit's dreams are shattered," they add.
The campaign, titled "Community Support for Paramjit Masutta Family" was launched Friday. In just one day, it's surpassed its initial $50,000 goal, raising over $56,800 from more than 1,000 donors.
The Masutta family says they are grateful for the "overwhelming support from the community" they have received thus far.
