Gofundme launched to honour life of 5-year-old boy killed by falling tree

"Weston was an outgoing, happy, passionate, kind, goofy, and smart kid who loved being in nature and looking at trees and plants and animals around him. He wanted to be an architect, a construction worker, a mechanic, and an artist when he grew up."

A fundraiser has been launched in memory of a 5-year-old Chilliwack boy who was killed by a falling tree on a hiking trail last week.

On Aug. 18, 5-year-old Westin Schwarzfeld was hiking with other children and teachers in the Browne creek wetlands. Tragically, a tree fell on the group, killing Westin and injuring a teacher who tried to rescue him.

Now, Martina Manley, Westin's aunt, has launched a gofundme campaign to honour's Westin's life. She notes that Westin's parents, Mallory and Glen, do not need money for expenses and felt uncomfortable having a gofundme. However, she says they will use the money raised to create a scholarship, bursary, or something to honour Weston’s name.

"They don’t know what they will do but know they will use the money to add joy to the world which is exactly what Weston did every day," writes Manley.

"Weston was an outgoing, happy, passionate, kind, goofy, and smart kid who loved being in nature and looking at trees and plants and animals around him. He wanted to be an architect, a construction worker, a mechanic, and an artist when he grew up."

Manley adds that Westin was so happy when he became a big brother, and always wanted to be near his baby sister and make her laugh.

A second gofundme has been launched to help cover the cost of the counselling services for the students and teachers present when the accident occurred. Find out more information about it HERE.
