Halloween forecast: Damp, grey week ahead for Vancouver

As Halloween approaches, Metro Vancouver will see a damp week

It's going to be rainy in Vancouver this week.

As Halloween approaches, weather systems appear set to keep Vancouver damp and grey for the week.

After torrential downpours this weekend in the region (Bellingham, Washington got 36 mm in one hour and Abbotsford was hit by 41 mm Saturday night, Oct. 26), things lightened up through Sunday.

Environment Canada meteorologist Gary Lee says that trend will continue for the next couple of days, but not for the week.

"Showers are going to go on all the way until tomorrow afternoon," Lee tells V.I.A. on Oct. 27. "They'll be tapering off in the later hours."

Temperatures are expected to peak at 13 C on Monday and drop as low as 5 C overnight. It'll likely be the warmest day of the week.

It's at that time that a ridge of high pressure will build up.

Overnight, that could cause fog, creating a foggy morning on Tuesday, Oct. 29, with temperatures as low as 5 C.

The ridge will also keep the area relatively dry for Tuesday, though it could still be cloudy, Lee says.

"The ridge will start to collapse late Tuesday and the next system is coming Wednesday," he cautions.

The Wednesday system could bring up to 20 mm of rain, Lee adds.

And while that system will move on, it'll leave instability behind for the rest of the week.

"There'll be showers pushing into the Thursday morning period, " Lee says.

He notes that those showers may break up later on Halloween eve and there may be clear skies for trick-or-treating on Oct. 31.

"Bring rain gear just in case, it's a 30 PoP (probability of precipitation), so just in case," he advises.

It could get cold Halloween night, as well, with a low of 4 C on top of damp air.

Temperatures from Tuesday to the end of the week are likely to reach highs of 11 C. Lows will progressively get cooler, with Tuesday evening the warmest at 8 C and Friday night dropping to 4 C.
